Artist statement
As a visual and performing artist, I am interested in how community is created and sustained. With this collection I’ve focused on creating batik fabric portraits that are ready to hang.
From the hand-dyed fabric, to the wood paneling and resin, to the subjects of the portraits themselves, each step is steeped with intimacy, in a unique process that I’ve developed over many years.
Bio
Brooklyn based visual artist/actor, Ameerah Briggs, has been exploring portraiture since her early childhood. Be it drawing, oil painting, or ceramics. With a depth of experience in multiple mediums, Ameerah creates batik fabric portraits for her boutique art business. Pulling from art quilting, she begins by creating a drawing from a photograph. This drawing then becomes a pattern which dictates where each individual fabric piece is laid in accordance to color value. In her work Ameerah explores capturing a person's essence and state of mind, momentarily peeking into each individual’s life.
Ameerah’s work has been featured in the Dorsey Art Gallery, the oldest, continuously running Black-owned gallery in New York City. She’s also been featured in First Stage, a collaborative showcase that brings together visual artists, filmmakers, actors, playwrights, and musicians. Each sharing their work with a live audience.
